Escape to the Secret Place

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. –Psalm 91:1

God is a shelter, a refuge when we are afraid. The writer’s faith in God as protector would carry him through all the dangers and fears of life. This should be a picture of our trust–trading all our fears for faith in Him, no matter how intense our fears. To do this we must “live” and “rest” with Him. By entrusting ourselves to His protection and pledging our daily devotion to Him, we will be kept safe.

Life Application Study Bible p. 941

The secret place! There is no other place I would rather be not just when life’s troubles come knocking at my door but just in general. I know I am not the only one who takes delight in spending time with God so escaping to the secret place is something I enjoy doing. To be honest, sometimes I do not make the time to do so and the results would be so evident throughout my day.

In the secret place, we meet our Father. We commune with Him. We come bearing burdens we cannot bear on our own. We lay our cares at His feet. We surrender. We receive grace and mercy amongst so many other things so escaping to the secret place is something that all believers should make time to do.

Recall in scripture the numerous times Jesus escaped to commune with the Father:

Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed. – Mark 1:35

Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while He sent the multitude away. And when He sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray. – Mark 6:45-46

So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed. – Luke 5:16

There are so many things that stop believers from meeting with God in the secret place. It may be shame, condemnation, sin, lies of the enemy, etc. These are things that should cause us to run to the throne of God because in His presence, we receive what we need. Hebrews 4:16 states “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

What is keeping you from seeking God? Are you facing any obstacles or troubles? Do you feel as if you need more strength for this spiritual journey? Recall Psalm 91:1. The word dwell means “to sit down, remain.” Secret place means “a cover, hiding place, protection, secret.” Whether life is going well or you are going through some of life’s troubles, I would like to encourage you to escape to the secret place and spend time in prayer with God.

I pray that the following Scriptures and songs will encourage you to escape to the secret place!

You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah. – Psalm 32:7

The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand. – Psalm 121:5

For you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat. – Isaiah 25:4

Each will be like a hiding place from the wind, a shelter from the storm, like streams of water in a dry place, like the shade of a great rock in a weary land. – Psalm 32:2
